STORY OUTLINE

INTRO CINEMATIC
Fisherman out at sea on his own on a medium sized boat.  Storm approaching, so decides to head back to land.  Large waves and current pull him off-course and he heads straight into the eye of the storm.  (Que EPIC Music) Suddenly the storm vanishes and all is calm, then in the distance through light fog, the man sees land.  Then all of a sudden a rickety flying machine zooms right in-front of his ship wobbling his boat.  He then notices two large ship either side of him battling each other with numerous cannons and other weapons, aswell as firing anti-air rockets at the flying machines around them.  In the background islands begin to become fully visible.  There is a large island close to him to the North-East, there is also another smaller island behind that towards the North-West.  Behind both of them, straight North is a floating island, waterfalls are dripping from multiple locations, and there are huge jets beneath the island keeping it in the air.  There are multiple flying machines and ships docked around all 3 islands.  There is a lot of activity and no one seems to care you are there and clearly out of place.

INTRO TO GAME
You dock on the nearest island where you are greeted by a friendly-ish old pirate-ish character.  (turns to other ‘friendly-ish old pirate-ish character’): “hey joe, we got a new guy! He looks worse than the last guy!”.. (turns back to you): “I bet you cant tell whats real, aye? Well.. You’ve stumbled across Skymore, you lucky boy! Haha. Ha. Once you’re in, you cant get out, so get used to it.  Theres currently a faction war going on.. what am I talking about, theres always a faction war here!” (walks past you to look at your boat): “this is new.. we haven’t had someone new arrive in over 8 years.. this is a nice boat.. you might just make a name for yourself with a beauty like that.” (turns back to you): “I bet you got a lot of questions.. theres a nice booklet that all newcomers get, Here.  I cant read so I got no ideas what it says, but I can give you enough knowledge about this place to keep you alive for a few hours at least. Haha. Ha.”

“The Lost Islands of Skymore.  No one knows how we all got here, and no one knows how to get out, but no one really cares to find out.  These islands have been populated for centuries, and from what new arrivals have told us, it is very different here, from where you came from that is.  There are 4 islands, BLAH, BlaH, BLAh that floating island you saw, and BLAH, the sunken island.  This island is strictly FACTION 1, and FACTION 2 claimed that BLAH island over there about 5 years ago..  The floating and sunken islands are neutral zones, most of the time anyways..  ha!. The factions are battling for full control of Skymore, since the High Lord of Skymore, Telsa, disappeared exactly 10 years ago. She was awesome…… anyhow!.. er.. All faction warriors have their own ship, and fights and battles are going on constantly.  There hasn’t been a silent night since Telsa vanished.  People like me and joe upgrade and improve ships to help the cause.  Our technology advances pretty fast, but I bet its very different from what your used to. The last guy that arrived couldn’t believe what he was seeing and thought he was dreaming for over a year! Bit of a wack-job.. loooopy! Haha. Ha… so  yea! You better go announce your arrival to someone more important than me, then find a way to make some CURRENCY and get your ship kitted out real quick, or you’ll get mowed down before you have a chance to.. you know.. er.. I dunno… You get me.  Haha. Ha.” (Turns to walk over to joe):
Oh, just before you go, what did you say your name was?”

ENTER NAME

“nice to meets ya.  I’m Mec, be sure to come by when you need some modifications done, ill sort you out a real good deal! Ha.”

QUICK OVERVIEW OF GAME STORY – ish
Forced to join FACTION 1 and work for them.  After a few jobs and battles, you start to secretly work for FACTION 2 as a double agent type-thing. You do Jobs and Battles for both, more like a mercenary.  You make a few friends.  FACTION 1 leaders find out about u being a double agent, and send peoples after you.  You and some friends battle and flee to floating island.  You create your own FACTION and begin to build up your own CAUSE on the FLOATING ISLAND.  After a large amount of jobs, battles, back and forth.. blah blah, etc..  FACTION 1 and 2 fear you taking over and team up against you.  More jobs, battles etc.. but you start to do more secretive jobs, battles, etc.. whilst trying to find out what happened to High Lord Telsa.. a story begin to unravel about a hidden underworld below the sunken island.  You find out that below the sunken island is a way back and forth to the rest of the world.  And that the Sunken Island was sunk on purpose to stop people coming and going over 200 years ago.. and there is a secret group of people who have been tasked with keeping it all a secret, they approach you and warn you, you ignore, then they come after you and your entire faction.  So its you and your faction against everyone.  After epic battles and jobs, there is one final epic battle between YOUR FACTION, OTHER MERGED FACTION, AND the SECRET FACTION.  3 way WARRR! You win, obviously. And sunken island is risen, and pathway back and forth to real world is opened. Game ends.  But you can continue to play doing random jobs, battles, etc.. and upgrading your ship more and more.

LOOK N FEEL

Pitch so far (in a Word Doc atm)... (20/02/2012)

Working  Game  Title

The Lost Islands of Skymore

IP  Opportunity  Statement

IP  Statement

My IP Opportunity is the theme of 'Pirates' combined with 'Flying/Flight'.

IP  Justification

I feel that choosing Pirates and Flying/Flight for my IP is a safe and good choice as there is a strong following and popularity in both, and it looks as though they are going to become more popular in the near future.  There is also the potential that they could work well together.
Both of my IP choices have the potential to appeal to all audiences and ages, and can be used in many genres.

If you would like to read my full Justification, please go to http://mikeudallblackbull.blogspot.com/

Game  Genre

The main focus of the game is Vehicle Combat from a Third Person perspective, whilst following a Story Line, so I would label the Genre as ‘Action Adventure’, but there is also the elements of a ‘Shooter’ genre.

Specification for Target Audience

Pirate themed media seems to do well at attracting a wide age group, and I plan to take advantage of that fact.

I am generally aiming this game at a male audience of around the ages of 7 – 25.  I understand that 7 - 25 is quite a broad age group, but I feel that it is accurate, as the visual style of the game will especially attract a younger audience (7 – 15), whilst the gameplay and general idea of the game will also attract a slightly older audience too.

Games nowadays are fairly expensive (£40+), but games that are downloadable from Console Marketplaces - which this game will be - are usually around £10 - £15, which is far more affordable for a younger audience / the younger audience’s parents.

Broad Game Description

As stated before, the focus of the game will be Vehicle Combat, whilst following a Story Line.  The Vehicles that the players and enemies use can freely transform between a Plane-like, Ship-like, and Submarine-like machine.

As the player plays through the Story, they will be collecting Currency, which they will use to upgrade their Vehicle.  The final goal is to fully upgrade your Vehicle, to destroy the opposing Factions and to open up the Route back to the rest of the World.

The player will achieve this by completing Missions one-by-one, following the Story Line; Missions will consist of Faction Battles, Escorts, Deliveries, and Defend-the-Zone’s, all of which are completed with Vehicle Combat.

The environment consists of 4 small islands, meaning there are no Levels or Stages, just a Medium sized World where all the Missions occur.  You could say the 4 islands are 4 separate areas, but all are accessible from the beginning, and you can freely travel between all 4.

Look and Feel

The general Look I am aiming for is; Colourful Futuristic Cell-Shaded Scrapyard.

Colourful:  Lost of bright and primary colours.

Futuristic:  Lost of shiny silver, cogs, and engines.

Cell-Shaded:  Use of a black outline on most things, and use of simple shading and                                  highlighting to make everything have a hint of cartoon.

Scrapyard:  Use of wood materials combined with shiny but rusted metal, to make it look like             everything mechanical has been thrown together and is unstable.

I want the game to make player feel confined and trapped on these islands.  I want the player to feel like the small world they are trapped in is harsh, and so they are forced to fight, in the aim to escape.  At the same time, I want the game to look and feel Fun.

ENVIRONMENTS

I am aiming for a colourful, cell shaded, almost cartoon style.  I want the environments to be over the top and exaggerated, and I want each island to be clearly recognisable (a key trait per island).  I am going to achieve this with use of different weather types per islands, and contrasting colour schemes on all the islands.  I want the environments to look Fun and Busy.

For the surrounding Sea area, I want it to be very blue, with debris floating around Battle Zones, and I want there to be constant medium sizes waves.

VEHICLES

I want the Vehicles to be the most detailed and busy-looking part of the game.  I am aiming for the perfect combination between Futuristic and Scrapyard.  The vehicles will be slightly more Metal built as the player purchases more upgrades.  I want the weapons on the vehicles to be over-the-top and menacing.

The players Vehicle is going to look slightly more impressive than any of the other Vehicles, as theirs is the most modern ship that has entered The Lost Islands of Skymore.

Main Character
CHARACTER

Name - Paul Networth
Age - 35
Height – 5ft 11in
Weight – 13 stone
Hair colour - black
Eye colour - blue
You play Paul Networth, who was a simple 35 year old fisherman.  He has a wife and 2 kids, which is his why he wants to get out of Skymore so badly.  He accidently finds his way into Skymore, and finds desperately wants to find a way back home, despite everyone telling him there is no way to leave the islands.

He is a natural-born leader and is very resourceful.  He is kind and welcoming, and stands up for himself and his beliefs.

VEHICLES

Paul Networth’s fishing boat becomes his Combat Vehicle once he gets to Skymore.  The Mechanics in Skymore instantly transform it into a force to be reckoned with, but there are still endless upgrades and weapons that can be added to it later in the game.

Below is an example image of what I want the Fishing Boat to look like at the start of the game, before any modifications.  It isn’t tiny, but it is defenceless and will look feeble next to the modified Pirate Ships.

This is what I want the initial modifications to look like; minimal weapons and a simple flight propeller, which transforms to cover the top of the ship when it turns into a submarine.

Below are images of what the player’s ship could look like eventually.  It will be much bigger and more pirate ship-like.  There will be many modifications and body types to unlock and choose from, so each player’s ship will gradually become more and more unique.

Below are some of the weapons I have in mind.  They are basic designs, and there will be upgraded versions that will do more damage, fire faster, be bigger and look awesome-er.

NPC’s (Non Player Character)

The citizens of Skymore all have a similar Look and Style to their appearance.  Their clothing is fairly colourful and each Faction has its own representative colour.

Mec and Joe (mechanics for Faction 1, but join your faction later in the game).

Riz (your partner when you join either Faction 1 or 2. Joins your faction later in the game).

Telsa (High Lord of Skymore until she disappeared 10 years before your arrival).
