Transport - Horizon Scanning

Transport
Horizon Scanning

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.

UAV's are a very new technology and they are quickly becoming more and more useful and reliable.
Pappalardo, J. (2010).
There are many articles out there that explain the new developments of UAV's, and what they are capable of.
"Unmanned aircraft are the biggest thing to happen in military aviation since stealth geometry, and the Air Force's leadership is dramatically increasing the UAV fleet this year." - Pappalardo, J. (2010)."the total UAV market including air vehicles, ground control equipment and payloads is expected to be worth $13.6 billion through 2014. More than 9,000 UAVs are expected to be purchased over the next 10 years by countries in every region of the world." - DefenseIndustryDaily. (2005).
"the 'Unmanned Aircraft Systems Flight Plan, 2009-2047,' a comprehensive look at how the U.S. military can expand the use of UAVs over the next 38 years." - Pappalardo, J. (2010).

DefenseIndustryDaily. (2005).
With so much change, so quickly, mass amounts of controversy follow.  There are many people discussing the change and increase as a good move, whereas others are saying it is a dangerous move, and we are putting too much faith in technology and computer controlled machines.

I understand both sides of the argument, but there is no denying that the future is in UAV's, whether we like it or not, it has already been put in motion.

Games

Play. (2011). Mario Kart 7.
Mario Kart 7.
The Mario series seems to be endless and new games are constantly coming out.  Even though most other franchise couldn't pull this off, Mario manages with ease, bringing in tonnes of profit on each game.  The newest is Mario Kart 7 which actually gets released tomorrow.
I think the reason Mario has been steadily popular and will continue to be, is because the target audience in all the games is everyone.  Children, teenagers, and adults can all enjoy the games.

Play. (2011). Ace Combat: Assault Horizon - Legacy.
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon.
This air combat game is due for release tomorrow, 02/12/2011, and is a 3DS game.
The gameplay is solely air combat, which incorperates the 3D feature, and touch screen targeting.  It is set in modern day, and the aircrafts are real life replicas.
I think this game could do well.  Other solely air combat games for consoles haven't done overly well, but this game could do better as it is on the 3DS and the controls have been improved from the previous titles.
I think the game will be targeted at teenagers, more towards young teenagers.

Play. (2011). Pocoyo 3D.
Pocoyo 3D.
This amusing looking game is a racing game for the Wii.  It is due for release 9th December 2011, just in time for christmas.  It is a racing game based around the character Pocoyo; a TV character for young children.
This is one of the first racing games aimed at a very young audience, that I have seen.  It was a good move releasing it on Wii, as very young children will not have an Xbox or PS3, and the Wii is more of a family console.
Without the Wii Wheel controlling the steering, I don't think this game would exist.  I solely relys on interactive fun, mainly due to it being aimed at a young audience.
I think this game will do well, as there aren't any other games like this (racing) for young children.

Play. (2011). Off-Road Drive.
Off-Road Drive.
Due for release on 9th December 2011, this off-road racing game will do well as a christmas present.
This racing game is one of many in the Off-Road series.  It is a simulation racing game which lets the player race in exact replica SUV's on exact replica tracks.  The competitions the player competes in are the same as the real life ones.  Whilst driving the player can control the vehicle to extremes; "players not only control the speed and heading of the vehicle, but also locking the main, front and rear differential gears, using the whinch, and adjusting the tire pressure." - Play. (2011). Off-Road Drive.
This game is set aside from other racing game as it is very realistic and very different.  The previous games have done well and this installment is a huge improvement on the past games, so with more advertising, it could do very well, as racing games generally do.

Play. (2011). Ski-Doo: Snowmobile Challenge.
Ski-Doo: Snowmobile Challenge.
"In sub-zero temperatures, surrounded by blinding white snow and hard blue ice, with engines screaming and skis scraping accross the track, 100 miles an hour might just be fast enough to win." - Play. (2011). Ski-Doo: Snowmobile Challenge.
This snow racing game is released on 20th Jan 2012 and is quite original compared to the standard racer.  The vehicles are modelled on their real world counterparts, and the visuals are very appealing with vast landscapes and snow covered enviroments.
This game has single player aswell as upto 12 player multiplayer which I did not expect when I first looked into this game.  Without the multiplayer this game would seem pretty everyday and not so good, but the thought of racing against upto 12 other people on huge snow covered tracks and mountains at ridiculous speeds sounds genuinely appealing.  It is definately a step forward in racing games.
The rating is 3+ but I see this as a game for 12+, with the majority audience being 12 - 25.

Play. (2011). Combat Wings: The Greatest Battles Of World War II.
Combat Wings: The Greatest Battles of WWII.
This air combat based game to be released on 27th Jan 2012 is for the Wii, and takes the player back to World War II, where they fight in all the famous battles and many others.  The flight controls are adapted specifically for the Wii which makes them more interactive and physical, which I see as the selling point for this game.
Based on previous titles that have been soley air combat, without the interactive controls of the Wii, this game wouldn't do well, but with them, I can see it doing very well.
The rating is 12+ which I see as appropriate, as controlling a plane will be slightly to complex for anyone younger than 12, and the violence is inappropriate.

Play. (2011). Ridge Racer: Unbounded - Limited Edition.
Ridge Racer: Unbounded.
Released on the 2nd March 2012, this racing game is a realistic looking street racing game.
The game is mainly about street racing, but there is a slight role-playing aspect to the game where you can expand your 'turf', gain 'respect' and level-up your 'gang'.
It is just another racing game in my eyes, and it doesn't seem to be different to any other similar racing titles.  But I guess, why change something if it isn't broken.  It will still do well, especially with a rating of 3+.  Lots of younger teenagers and children will want to get this game as most racing games are rated higher: 'Need for Speed: The Run' - Rating 12+.

Play. (2011). Birds of Steel.
Birds of Steel.
Another air combat based game... I know right.. There hasn't been many games like this one over the years that consoles have been out, and the ones that have been released never do spectacually well, and now 3 new games get released within 1 week.
If that doesn't spell out an increased popularity then I do not know what popularity is.  Or maybe games companies are insane.
But to the point, due for release on 1st March 2012, this game takes the player back to WWII to fight in all the battles.  This game leans more towards a flight simulator than a game soley for fun.  It is still made for fun, but the flying difficulty is more realistic, and battles are harder.  There is also a multiplayer side to the game which interested me.  You get to battle all together or up against each other, either in teams, or all as lone wolves.
This games seems like it is aimed less at families and more towards young adults.  The rating is still TBC, but I predict it will be 12+ or possibly 15+ because of the more realistic violence.
As technology progesses, simulator games begin to look more and more realistic and gameplay and controls are improved, which makes this probably one of the best flight simulators avaliable for console.

Films

IMDB. (2011). Red Tails.
Red Tails.
"A crew of african American pilots in the Tuskegee training program, having faced segregation while kept mostly on the ground during World War II, are called into duty under the guidance of Col. A.J. Bullard." IMDB. (2011). Red Tails.
This film looks like it could be very interesting; the CGI effects are apparently phenominal, and the story definately has weight.
This is going to be an epic underdog film.
Underdog stories are always loved by the public, and if you throw action and suspence in with it, then you are bound to sell well.
It is rated as a PG13, and I see the target audience as everyone.  The action will interest everyone, especially younger viewers, and the good story will keep the older viewers watching.  It isn't overly action packed, so you can't call it a 'man-film' which will help get families to watch it together.
The difference between this a film from the past such as Top Gun, are the CGI effects.  They are going to be 10 times better and as long as the story is just as gripping as Tog Gun's, then this film has the potential to do just as well.
IMDB. (2011). The Dark Knight Rises.
The Dark Knight Rises.
The sequal to 'The Dark Knight' (2008), this film has huge hype and is under pressure to be amazing.  From the look of the teaser trailer, this film is going to provide.
The main villain this time is Bane, which alot of fans are very happy about.
The batman franchise has such a massive following, this film is inevitably going to be a hit.
The progression of this film from the last is that batman has fled Gotham City as he made himself look like the badguy for the greater good, but must now return to save Gotham City once more.  A true hero who puts everyone before himself, and doesn't expect gratitude.
This film has an immense budget of $250,000,000, and is expected to release mid July 2012.
One of the key attributes of batman is his vehicles; batmobile, aircrafts and his glider cloak.  Without these, batman wouldn't be so spectacular.  The batmobile always plays a key role in any batman story; in 'The Dark Knight' (2008), there was an epic car chase scene, and at the end, batman ejects from his destroyed batmobile on a motorbike which I did not expect.

GetTheBigPicture. (2011).
Bourne Legacy.
This film is the finale to the Bourne series at this time.  Although I have found information about possibly extending the series.  There have been 3 films so far, and all 3 have done very well, even whilst being compared to the Mission Impossible films.
The films are based on the books by Eric Van Lustbader.  They do not follow them exactly, as all the content of the book cannot fit into one film.
There have been epic chase scenes in all the bourne films so far, and it is always one of the most epic moments of the film.  In the most recent one; Bourne Ultimatum, the chase scene is immense and there are many close calls, and Jason Bourne drives recklessly smashing into other cars and the environment whilst flee his pursuiters.
The general story of Jason Bourne, is that he was the best Agent in the business and eventually he needed to be killed as he was dangerous, but he managed to escape and has been on the run since.  The is a good hearted and highly dangerous character.
As he is always on the run, he is constantly travelling and fleeing countries.
It seems that each film that comes out is more action packed, and the epic moments have been increasingly more epic.  So for this new film, they are going to have to top some amazing scenes and stunts.
Planned release is August 2012, and there is speculation about it being a 2 part film, but it is unconfirmed.

Youtube. (2011). PREMIUM RUSH - Official Trailer.
Premium Rush.
"In Manhattan, a bike messenger picks up an envelope that attracts the interest of a dirty cop, who purpues the cyclist throught the city." - IMDB. (2011). Premium Rush.
This film is definately original, I haven't seen anything quite like it before.
From the look of the trailer, it is action packed and fast paced, and there is a moment in the trailer above where the bike messenger is hit side on by a fast moving taxi, and by the looks of it, you see the whole impact which wouldn't have been visually possible a few years ago, but with better CGI effects, a realistic bike and car accident is clearly possible.
The film isn't released until late September 2012, and doesn't have a rating, but I'd assume it'll be a 15+, and the target audience is probably any age above 15, but will most likely attract an older audience of 18+.

Books

Waterstones. (2011). Search Results: 'Transport'.
From doing a simple search on the Water Stones website, I found that there were just over 50 books coming out in the next year or so, that are related to Transport in some way.
Barely any were novels/stories, which isn;t surprising.  Most were factual books, manuals, or books to help with learning to drive.

These results show that there is a continuous popularity in the area of transport in books, but it isn't growing, nor shrinking.

  1. This is a nice piece of information about the submarine, but what were you looking/searching for when you found it - where did you start your research. You need to put aross your comments and observations on the articles and examples you find but also demonstrate a research path.

Overall you should be further into your research at this stage given the short time frame for this module.

  2. We know that you haven't deleted any of our comments, but just for future reference...
We are asking all third year students not to delete our comments from your Futures DD3000 blogs without agreement from us. Our comments are part of your feedback and as such are an integral part of your formal assessment, so even if you update your blog and make amendments and changes based on feedback, we still need to see a record of the feedback we give you in the comments we make.

  3. In order to be on schedule you should have completed your horizon scanning by now and started to look at a forecast of your IP based on your research.
Please see schedule on webct and also read the brief again thoroughly to fully understand the Forecast and IP justification section requirements for this module.

  4. Please call this Horizon scanning- rather than 'Future' for both topics.
Take a look at this website to see what's coming up in films.
    http://www.movieinsider.com/movies/-/2012/

If there is anything relevant to your topics, research the Directors and producers of the specifically relevant films. Checkout their age and the sort of media they would have been influenced by when they were about 10 years old.
From this you can ascertain what the men who have power in media today are likely to find exciting and might be prepared to invest in as an IP in the near future.

  5. Mike Udall - Ocean Motion (Transport and Sea)

You need to run Spell Checker and grammar checker to identify the obvious mistakes, but please make sure you read through your blog posts and any comments to address any other issues and presentation problems. If you need help with any of this please ask.

Please ensure you use the headings in the brief: Horizon scanning should be called horizon and not future....this has been mentioned in your comments already.

You must reference images and your sources of information within your pages using (author, date), with your complete reference in your bibliography page. Please also remember that Wikipedia is NOT considered an academic resource - please use the original source of information which is usually given on the wiki page.

You must also reference the sources of your information. For example:
" Chinese Submarine (Jiaolong) and its crew of 3, dived to depths of over 5000 meters during September 2011."
Without the reference it is just supposition/opinion and not considered viable research. You need to read through all of your research and where possible verify your statements and facts with sources - you do not need to copy any text from these sources unless it helps your arguments, just add the reference to support your statements. (I suggest you colour code all your references so they stand out. (It is also worth if you have time, making those references link to the place where the information is found.))

Make sure you discuss the relevance of your examples in showing the popularity of your topic and I suggest you colour code these comments to make them more identifiable.
Also, where possible, please make sure that all your images link to the place where they were found.

Make sure your examples are relevant in each section – your research for present is the last 2-5 years at most, but without your references it is difficult for us to verify this (Pirates of the Caribbean, 2003 is probably stretching this unless you can prove relevance)

Be careful that your research does not get bogged down with too much information - you are trying to prove or disprove a popularity for your topic - we do not need to know the back story to each example (unless relevant to your arguments) or have the full quotes from articles (just a small relevant snapshot).

  6. feedback continued.....
You need to make sure your blog is formatted and presented well - your blog is very narrow and the font large, which makes there seem a lot of text. Do not let it get too wordy. Also some images do not fit in the window (E.g. Waterstone's search results)

Make sure quotes are in italics to make them identifiable from the rest of your blog and again reference correctly.

Ideally at the end of each post draw some conclusions about what you have found: Does the diversity of research material show popularity for your topic, in not only name, but in the various definitions you have looked at? What other conclusions can you draw from your research?

Where possible, please make sure that all your images link to the place where they were found.

Horizon Scanning: Try to keep it visual and not too wordy and be more expansive in your research. Transport is mainly examples from games.
Have a think about what might change or improve your topic in the future. You need to consider what you might look at in your forecast in order to look at what might be relevant on the Horizon. You can then include anything in your research that you may be able to use in your forecast. Horizon scanning is meant to be an overview of anything that might influence your topic, which is coming out in the near future. You could consider developments in 3d/holographic imaging and how this may improve our understanding of the sea, or how GPS and mobile communications may affect transport.

There don't appear to have been any updates to your blog during November which is concerning.
You currently have no Forecast, IP opportunity statement, bibliography or IP Justification for me to feedback on.
Given there is only one week left, it is imperative that you get these points finished before addressing the corrections to your existing research.
